Intensification of contrast

Сite-specific installation, 2013
Books, cement

The street installation, which has become a network meme, acts as a manifesto of improving the urban environment through contemporary art.

The artist paved the ruined fragment of the library's facade with books, stylized them as bricks with characteristic layers of mortar. In fact, the work is an inversion of the “Complete set of works” sculpture with the difference that the book’s metaphor as a brick is reincarnated — books are directly used as bricks. One readymade integrates into another, producing the effect of a visual rhyme.

The facade of the building was subsequently restored. Thus, the initial installation generated a cycle of its own new updates. Together, they constituted work as a holistic gesture, incorporating the ethical response of the collective audience as a significant component of the aesthetic.
